Greetings Childs Families!

It is with great joy and excitement that I introduce myself to you as the newly appointed Principal of Bernice Childs Elementary School. This upcoming school year will mark my 10th year as an administrator (combined experience as an Assistant Principal and Principal.) My teaching experience of 8 years stems from the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and a neighboring south suburban school district. With almost 20 years of educational experience I am grateful for those experiences which all have shaped my professional career in becoming a dedicated and driven leader and learner.

As your principal, my goal is to build strong relationships with parents, staff, scholars (students) and community partners. We will continue to focus on CHAMPS for behavior management; MAP assessments to inform and drive instruction; full implementation of common core standards combined with district initiatives; and consistent high expectations from all staff by providing engaging and challenging enrichment opportunities. My ultimate school-wide priority is to increase parental involvement. Parents/families are the cheerleaders for our scholars and are encouraged to participate in every aspect of their learning. I anticipate a most successful year as the staff and I will prepare our future leaders for excellence; academically, socially, and emotionally.

I had the pleasure to meet your children through an end of the year school wide visit. I look forward to their arrival in full uniform daily. Please note the following important changes for this upcoming school year: Scholar arrival time is 7:30 they should enter through door #4 closest to the playground. After 8:00 AM all scholars/parents and visitors will need to enter through the main door.

Again, I am confident we will have an amazing school year! I welcome your positive and valued input, feel free to visit, call or email (mjohnson@prsd1435.org) The connection between home and school are essential as we strive for excellence to guide our scholars/your children to become world class learners!

Warmest Regards,

Michelle Johnson, Principal
